What is breast asymmetry (unequal breasts)?

Breast asymmetry is a condition where the breasts are significantly different in shape and/size.

Most women have breasts that are a bit different. A commonly used phrase is ‘they are sisters, not twins’. Women might be concerned about breast asymmetry if the difference is significant, and the breasts are different cup sizes.

What causes breast asymmetry?

Breast asymmetry can be developmental i.e occur at the time when the breasts are initially developing. Sometimes this can be associated with abnormalities of the chest wall. A chest trauma or burn before breasts are fully developed can lead to asymmetry.

Previously symmetrical breasts can become asymmetrical with time as they age and start drooping. At times, significant weight change, gain or loss can also lead to existing breast asymmetry being exaggerated.

What are the risks?
  • Scarring

  • Temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation

  • Risk of infection

  • Dissatisfaction with cosmetic result (especially volume loss if not reconstructed)

What are the treatment options for breast asymmetry?
  • Breast asymmetry can be corrected by

  • Reducing the bigger breast

  • Enlarging the smaller breast with implant or fat grafting (here)

  • Surgery on both breasts to achieve desired shape and size for both
