Breast Reduction Surgery: What You Need to Know

What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to remove extra breast fat, tissue, and skin to reduce the size of your breasts. It's often done to relieve physical discomfort or to improve body proportions and confidence.

Why Do People Choose Breast Reduction?

Many people seek breast reduction because large, heavy breasts can cause:

  • Back, neck, and shoulder pain

  • Skin irritation or rashes under the breasts

  • Grooving from bra straps

  • Posture problems

  • Difficulty with exercise or physical activity

  • Unwanted attention or self-consciousness

Breast reduction can help improve these symptoms and make everyday activities easier and more comfortable.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

You might be a good candidate for breast reduction if:

  • You are physically healthy and have realistic expectations

  • You don't smoke, or you’re willing to stop before and after surgery

  • Your breasts cause physical discomfort or interfere with daily life

  • You’re bothered by the size of your breasts emotionally or mentally

It’s also important to wait until breast development has stopped, unless medically necessary at a younger age.

What Happens During the Surgery?

The surgery is usually done under general anesthesia and takes 2 to 4 hours. The surgeon will:

  1. Make incisions (usually around the nipple and down the breast)

  2. Remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin

  3. Reshape and lift the remaining tissue

  4. Reposition the nipple if needed

Scars are usually permanent but tend to fade over time. Your surgeon will discuss different incision patterns and what might be best for your body.

What’s Recovery Like?

After surgery, you’ll need some time to rest and heal. Here's what to expect:

  • You’ll go home the same day or after one night in the hospital

  • You’ll wear a special surgical bra to support your breasts

  • Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal for a few weeks

  • You should avoid heavy lifting and intense activity for 4–6 weeks

  • Most people return to work in about 1–2 weeks, depending on the job

Follow-up appointments are important to monitor your healing and scar progress.

Are There Risks?

Like any surgery, breast reduction comes with risks, including:

  • Scarring

  • Infection or bleeding

  • Loss of nipple sensation (temporary or permanent)

  • Difficulty breastfeeding in the future

  • Asymmetry or dissatisfaction with the results

A qualified, experienced plastic surgeon will explain the risks and how they can be minimized.
